Saveur Summertime Salad Social - A Roundup of 10 Favorite Salads

Got a great idea for a summer party from the last issue of Saveur—a Salad Social! A potluck (or bring-a-dish, called in some circles a "hotdish") of nothing but salads. Everyone brings a salad—and, I'm assuming, it would be a good idea to find out in advance what each person wants to bring so you don't end up with a dozen bowls of coleslaw or ... well, you get the picture.

You will need main dish, side dish and dessert salads. One maverick couple at the party in the Saveur article even brought gazpacho—sneakily calling it "liquid salad" to slip it through. Doesn't that sound like fun?!

And apropos of absolutely nothing (though I do go through a lot of kitchen towels when I'm cooking), I just got an even dozen of the most fabulous kitchen towel ever! This 20x30-Inch Ripple Kitchen Towel is, at last, my dream towel!

But back to the party! Let's start with a main dish:

Here are two versions of broccoli salad:

You can't have a summer potluck without vast quantities of potato salad:

And, of course, a marvelous macaroni salad:

You'll want green salads. Here's one that can be made and dressed ahead:

Winter Salad (for summer, use a different tangerine)

And for something a little different:

And for dessert, fruit salads. If you're fortunate enough to get hold of some perfect peaches:

So where's Salad Number 10? You bring it! I know none of you ever put links in your comments (that would be gauche!), but today I am inviting you to include a link to your very favorite salad, whether it's on your own blog or someone else's. After all, this is a potluck!

  2. Funny how that happens! I really love salads, but I don't make them nearly often enough. You will love my mom's potato salad.

  3. Fun post, Jean! I'd eat the high-protein salad with the peaches for dessert. And I'd bring my 4 bean salad to share. :-) Thanks for the invitation! ;-)

  4. Judy, thanks! I love a nice, well-marinated four-bean salad. Just because something is easy doesn't mean it isn't delicious! Bring it!

  13. Oh that first pasta salad looks so good! It's been so hot here in Florida that I hardly ever cook anymore - I think you gave me the solution. No more frozen dinners for me!

  14. Thanks, Lana, glad to help! When it's just too hot to cook, you can have a big bowl of salad in the fridge and eat it for a few days.

  17. Late to the table, owing to limited access out on the road. BUT…I do like that Winter Salad – similar to something I make all year round. And I can recommend salads at a very special place called Zimmerman’s near Ann Arbor, Michigan. Also, a good spinach salad with a warm bacon dressing, or…a house salad at Outback Steakhouse with the house dressing (mustard vinaigrette at most locations), and I like to 86 the cukes and the onions. Goes very good with the Alice Springs Chicken (86 the Aussie chips) and Russian black bread. I have probably eaten more than 200 of these.

  18. Sully, thanks for the salad suggestions. I'll have to try those. I've always wanted to go to Zimmerman's and will do so one day. The family have fond memories of the Maurice Salad at Hudson's, something I missed out on but recently got a recipe for.

  19. Awesome salad suggestions! I love the variety. I'd have to bring my cucumber salad with feta and toasted bread crumbs. http://megan-deliciousdishings.blogspot.com/2013/08/cucumber-salad-with-feta-and-toasted.html

  20. Yes, Megan, DO bring that one - it would be a hit, for sure!

  21. Lovely salads Jean - potato, mm, my all time favourite! As for number 10... I humbly nominate my beetroot, feta and raspberry salad!

  22. Mmm ... yes, Charles, a tasty and attractive way to incorporate more beetroot into my diet!

  23. Oh, what a wonderful post. Salads can be so interesting, but I usually end up with something tasty...but quite boring! I will be taking some inspiration from you!

  24. Thanks, Rachel! I think we all get into ruts once in a while and don't take advantage of all the variety that's available.
