Cocktail Party Foods - Easy and Elegant HDs

Sausage Pinwheels - Easy and Elegant Cocktail Party Canape / www.delightfulrepast.com

Hors d'oeuvre--which I just call HDs because, let's face it, nobody, myself included, can pronounce it--get short shrift at Delightful Repast because I don't give a lot of Smart Little Drinks Parties. But here are three of my tried-and-true HDs and three more from some blogger friends.

Gougeres - French Cheese Puffs (below)

Sausage Rolls (below) are a British classic. I recommend my Ruff Puff (quick puff pastry) for them. Make lots because, whether they are "in" or "out" at a particular time, everyone loves them!

Sausage Pinwheels (the top photo) were made with my homemade sausage, but you can use any sausage you like. Sometimes I make my own puff pastry and other times I use a good frozen puff pastry.

The following three are from three of my favorite food bloggers. And you'll find nine more at my previous Cocktail Party Foods post, for a grand total of 15. So let's get this party started! What is your go-to "signature" HD?

Spinach Artichoke Dip Jalapeno Poppers - The View from Great Island

Chipotle Shrimp Wontons - Cooking on the Ranch

Ricotta Roasted Red Pepper Crostini - Noshing with the Nolands

Eggnog with Cooked Custard Base / www.delightfulrepast.com

Always offer plenty of alcohol-free beverages. For winter parties, might I suggest my Eggnog? You can make one pitcher with brandy (or other alcohol) and one without; or just leave out the alcohol and add a bit to individual servings for those who want it.

  5. Hors d'oeuvres. I can pronounce it but I can't spell it! Merry Christmas. GREG

  6. :D Thanks, Greg. I'll take a stab at it: Okay, it's not orderves. Or whores doovers. Something like or duhvrwa.

  7. “It” isn’t hard to pronounce if it’s spelled correctly. Horsdooveray, I make it. Of course, that makes it politically incorrect. The same Australian company that banned Santa saying “Ho, ho, ho…” because it might offend some women will never sanction my rendering of horsdooveray. Just sayin’. Me, I don’t care what you call it. I’ll take two of those pinwheels and a glass of that melted snow (how do you nog an egg) in your photos… Merry Christmas!

  8. Thanks, Sully! I just love HDs -- you can consume a dozen of them in no time at all, to the tune of about two days' worth of calories!

  20. Hi Jean, I hope yourself and the family have had a wonderful Christmas?
I didn't know that sausage rolls are just, British? Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans and Canadians might think they like them too.
By the way, I can say, hors doeurvres. It's living within a stones throw of France that does it. They love to hate us and we love to hate them but we love each other really, especially when we try to speak each other's language. ha! ha!
    Happy New Year to you!!

  21. Thanks, Tony! I always feel pretentious when I pronounce it correctly, but I can't bring myself to pronounce it incorrectly, so "HDs" it is! :D

  24. Ok everybody. Can I have your eyes looking at me. Thank you.
The phrase, Hors d'oeuvres, for the sake of good French relations should be said correctly.Hors d'oeuvres, is TWO syllables, pronounced "or derv."The letters of, d'oeuvres, are blended. You do not pronounce the H in hors, it is silent. There is NO , ray, sound at the end of the phrase. Altogether now..........!! Very good. I knew you could do it. There should be no embarrassment, no, people will think I am posh, stuff, just thoughts of a good friendly relationship with the French. One more thing, the ,hors, sound is made at the back of the throat, a little like a last gasp death rattle and the ,d'oeuvres, is said at the front of the mouth against your very nice sparkling teeth.
Have a nice day, you all!!!!

  25. Eyes on you, Tony! And I might add, for sticklers, no "s" sound at the end, even when you're talking about more than one. Thanks for the French lesson! :-)
